82nd Street Academics seeks part-time Instructors for our after-school program at 82nd Street Academics. The participants in the program are 120 students in K-5th grade. The goal of our program is to provide the academic and social-emotional support needed to help students develop the skills required to successfully complete their elementary education. We achieve these goals by providing a holistic program that includes homework assistance, art, dance, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities, fitness, leadership activities. And various social-emotional activities. This program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and is governed by a strong partnership with the host school.
The hours of this position are Mondays-Fridays 2:00pm-5:30pm. There are bi-weekly meetings and professional developments that may occur outside of these hours.
Rate of Pay: $18.00-$19.00 per hour depending on previous experience and related education.
Major Duties and Responsibilities include:
-Provide leadership on a day to day basis for a class of 10-15 elementary school students and maintain student retention whether instruction is remotely or in-person. Instructors are representatives of our agency in the school and are responsible for maintaining the culture of the school in the afternoon.
-Create lesson plans in advance of implementation ensuring that they are age appropriate and coincide with the goals of the program and our stakeholders. Much of our planning is based on Literacy, STEM and social-emotional learning activities. Staff will work as a team to provide activities and experiences that increase students' awareness of higher education. We will work together to promote a college-attending environment among students as well as support them in increasing their social-emotional and self awareness.
-Adhere to all protocols to deliver remote and/or in-person instruction effectively to maintain a safe environment for all. Cleaning student materials at the start and finish of your shift is required.
-Instructors are a role model for our students. Everyone on our team must be outstanding in adhering to remote and in-person policies on attendance and punctuality, dress code, and setting a tone of respect in interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and P.S. 280Q staff members.
-Communicate with parents when there is a concern that must be resolved and provide excellent customer service and a professional, caring demeanor in-person, by phone or email.
-Be flexible and able to adapt to last minute changes considering current day to day changes.
Education and Experience:
• Study plan towards college graduation with a BA (minimum)
• At least one year of experience working with the School-Age group in a professional setting (Middle School/High School preferred)
• Commitment to the program through the end of June is a non-negotiable requirement
• Bilingual fluency in Spanish or Mandarin is preferred
Demonstrated Abilities:
• Knowledge of best practices in working with children in an extracurricular setting
• Strong communication abilities in one-on-one meetings and in group settings
• Takes personal accountability for the program outcomes and take initiative to implement positive change in the face of challenges
